Fancy dress competition

Parents are invited to bring children in ‘carnival’ themed fancy dress for our popular annual fancy dress competition. Think colour and pizzazz! - colourful clothing, masks and flamboyant outfits including feathers, flowers and fancy dress costumes; anything that fits the carnival spirit!

Please assemble at the central gazebo just prior to 2pm. After the Mayor has formally opened the Carnival at 2pm, she and the other judges will lead the children on their short parade round the grounds.carnival day 2016

We are hoping for lots of colourful costumes, and the parade will be complete with drums and trumpets, so expect a little noise!

Prizes will be awarded in three age groups; up to age 5, 6-8 year olds, and 9-11 year olds.

The competition is being kindly sponsored by Abel of Hertford again this year, and director Ami Hayward will be one of the judges. Other judges will be the Mayor, the President of the Rotary Club, and Ann Hunter.

We want Hertford Carnival to benefit our local community, and charities have been selected to be the beneficiaries of all monies raised on the day from collections. We will be collecting on the gates, so please be generous!

The chosen charities this year are Isabel Hospice and Carers in Hertfordshire; click here for more details.

Photos and stories - your help required!

Help us capture the carnival for posterity!

Email us any good photos you take on the day; we would love to add the best to the website. Original, good quality photos that you own (ie that haven't been sent in without someone else's permission) are best. In the past few years we have been sent some great photos from some local people (see archive for the used ones). All photos will be credited with their source.

You can also send us your comments and stories on this year’s carnival; a selection will be published on the website.

Email address is anna_schlenker@hotmail.com (add the subject header 'Hertford Carnival'), or tweet us at @HertCarnival.

If you have a lot of photos you would like to share, we can arrange sharing via another method (DVD, cloud etc) (if you are unfamiliar with these, we will of course talk you through them).

Then watch to see if you appear on the website!

The procession (n/a)

Unfortunately, due to not enough participants in 2014, future years are also taking place without a procession (see Join the Procession).

If you are unhappy with this, make sure you apply for 2018! We would like the next event to be a big community day in the traditional carnival way, but do need a minimum number of floats to make it viable for costs and spectators. The organising is also mammoth, so please do join the committee if you really object!

Click here to return to top of the page.

Road closures (n/a)

There will be no road closures as there is no procession.
